Summary on SWP

I registered myself for two modules (E-learning & SWP) together without knowing anything :). Therefore I just continue with one day workshop at Distled College on 17 May 2009.

All of us were requested to post a question about Small World Play.

15 questions have been posted by all the participants as below:
1)What is small world play?
2)Which children would benefit most from small world play?
3)How do you engage withdrawn child into small world play?
4)Is small world play limited to children only?
5)How to apply the small world play? For who? When?
6)How does play therapy show progress in family development for the child?
7)Can play therapy help the behavioural child? What is the role of counsellor in the play therapy?
8)Can play therapy help those special children with no concept skills?
9)Is small world play more suitable for 1:1 or group play?
10)How do I consider/observe the integration/coalition of the small world play?
11)Do we need to have the knowledge of unspoken language/unconscious world/collative unconscious before going into the small world play?
12)Can we trust the child 100% during the play therapy sessions? How about if they keep changing their story-telling for every sessions?
13)How long is the healing process for autistics child?
14)Should we judge the children by their behaviour/action?
15)Should we give informed consent to the children?

On the workshop, we each created our own world with small miniatures or objects and shared them with our neighbour.

After the online tutorial, online supervision........I felt really hard for me just to look at the picture and try to figure out.

However, I have to complete mission with our group member.

The mission dossier is to produce a mix media learning package, introducing play workers to the basic knowledge and skills that they could acquire to engage their young clients with the intended aim of developing positive mental health and emotional resilience. Throughout this mission, I have enhanced my understanding about Small World Play.

Small World Play is an imaginative play where individuals are provided with small objects with which to play creating the small world. The individual is provided with a clearly defined private and delineated space such as at or under a small table, sand tray, play mat or in a small secluded corner. In the process, current preoccupations, inner subconscious and unconscious thoughts and feelings are projected and transferred onto the objects in the “small world”.

Small World Play can be applied to children as well as adult on individual basis or in group work. Small World Play is benefit most for individual who have difficulties in expressing themselves.

The play items for Small World Play can be comprised of small toys like insects, animals, human figures, transportations, boundaries, marbles, buildings, fantasy figure.............and natural materials like stone, pebble, leave, wood chip and etc.
The different items are selected for the individual to help them to connect to their inner world subconsciously when creating their small world play. What the individual is unable to do in reality but may manifest in fantasy.
SDQ & family profiling can be used as a tool or guildline to assess the individual.

Regarding on how to practice Small World Play and what are the areas to take note while practicing Small World Play?

It is important to acknowledge the pain of the child to gain trust, moving on to empowering and finally to celebrate with the child on the break through at the appropriate moment.

The optimal development of children is considered vital to society and so it is important to understand the social, cognitive, emotional, and educational development of children.
Child development refers to the biological and psychological changes that occur in human beings between birth and the end of adolescence, as the individual progresses from dependency to increasing autonomy. Age-related development terms are: newborn (ages 0–1 month); infant (ages 1 month – 1 year); toddler (ages 1–3 years); preschooler (ages 4–6years); school-aged child (ages 6–13 years); adolescent (ages 13–20).

It is important for a therapist to equip his/herself with the basic counselling skills like active listening, body language, asking open or close question, paraphrasing and summary. While carrying out the small world play, therapist should not try to alter the play, influence the choices the child made or to modify the child’s behaviour

Questions as useful guidelines when viewing children small world play:
1. where is the energy spots?
2. where are the trouble/problems spots?
3. Is there energy that can be used for resolution? Indications of a solution?
4. Where is the real self?
5. what kind of groupings are apparent?
6. what types of problems are indicated in the small world play?
7. are there sources of strength or help in the small world play?
8. What figures have been used - and how?
9. What are the relationships between figures?
10. What are the dynamic - static natures of the tray?
11. Consider chaotic, empty, organised elements
12. What's been buried?
13. Gut feeling - listen with heart - analyzes with head

We have to take note do & don't while practicing SWP. The Ethical Framework on Small World Play: six ethical principal

1. Fidelity : honouring the trust placed in the practitioner
2. Autonomy: respect children's right to be self-governing - interests of the child are paramount
3. Beneficence: Promoting the children's well being
4. Non-Maleficence - Avoid Harming the client
5. Justice: fair impartial treatment, equitable access
6. Self-respect: Practitioner's self acknowledge and care for self

Just the begining of my journey in Small World Play.

How to Determine If Your Child Needs Therapy

Mission Code Name: Operation Axis Mundi (SWP)

Are there references to ‘what’ and ‘how’ to observe for indicators that the child may require further specialist referral for psychological intervention from their emerging small world play which may suggest the presence of clinical psychopathology.

As I had chose on "‘what’ and ‘how’ to observe for indicators that the child may require further specialist referral". I tried to find out more information on it. I find that this link information is useful for me on "how" as I only need to summarise it.

Why I join CPPD course

I'm married with 3 kids. I worked as an Accountant in a manufacturing company. I joined this CPPD course is because I wish to learn/explore more in therapeutic skill in order to help my oldest son who is 10 years old.

I always confuse and don't know which should be the right/correct therapy for him to join in. I send him to Speech Therapy and Occupational Therapy at Loh Guan Lye Hospital and also Fast For Word and Play Attention at Kidz Grow.

Try to send him to Bold for Play Therapy, after "interview" by Min See thru phone, she felt that he is no need go for Play Therapy.

My friends also introduced me where myself also don't know whether is Sandplay Therapy or Sand Tray Therapy.

Really need to spend my time to explore it.

Mission Code Name: Operation Axis Mundi

Really need a rest after this two mission impossible.....

While I did my presentation for elearning, Melinda skyped me whether I have managed to crack the mission code.......Sorry to say that I just bookmarked it in my Elgg for 3 days without any reading or trying. Therefore I told myself that I need to try it by today.

When I read the mission, huh....I really felt tired when I saw that I need to listen to the podcast for 55 minutes. My mind blocked out and refused to continue. I just told myself not to give up and read again and again on the question and I found the key word.

For Question 1 & 2, I went back to my Elgg bookmark looking for The History & Development of Sandplay Therapy. It is quite straight forward......I just get the answer.......(I have bookmark it for 3 days without read it. I think Alex would like to ensure that we read it :))

For Question 3, I used google to seach for "process oriented psychology". Yes, I found it and check on wikipedia.

Wah!!! I'm so lucky that I managed to get the password....
